Hydroquinone: What Amount Is Safe And Effective?

When we read about skin aging, anti-aging and skin care products, we come across a lot of ingredients that we often get curious about.

One such ingredient has caught my attention and have been the object of a few short reads in the internet these past few days: hydroquinone.

Hydroquinone is one of the most sensationalized substance in the cosmetics and anti-aging industry, being banned from countries all over the world.

In a short and simple description, hydroquinone is a substance used for skin whitening or bleaching. This is why it is found in most cosmetics that sell on skin lightening or blemish removal.

There is no doubt though that results speak for themselves, although some users, especially those who are not comfortable with hydroquinone's side effects, argue that there's more to the quest for beautiful blemish-free skin minus the pain.

In truth, hydroquinone, when administered properly and applied in correct amounts, is safe and effective. Commercially available hydroquinone or skin care products containing the ingredient should not exceeed the 2% level. Skin care products with hydroquinone which are prescribed by doctors should not contain more than 4 percent.

In 4% skin bleaching creams such as the Obagi Blender, a thin layer is applied to hyperpigmented skin twice daily or as instructed by a doctor. The use for the product discountinues after 8 to 12 weeks of no visible improvement.

For those who are in interested in visibly removing dark spots or stubborn hyperpigmented skin, creams with hydroquinone could deliver the most optimum results. However, not all users are compatible with the product. That's why, as with any other skin care regimen, it's important to ask your doctor about it. After all, we always want the best and safest for our skin.
